Art Paws is "putting on the dog!"

Artown's 15th Annual Art Paws Delivers 'Pooch Couture'

The highlight at this year's Art Paws will be the pets, "the pooch parade," Executive director Landess Witmer calls it. Fondly referred to as the Doggie Fashion Show, Landess says it may be the main reason to go to Art Paws.

"This is an outside dog show of all and any breed imaginable," boasts Witmer.  "And, best of all, these dogs know they are the guest of honor at Art Paws; it IS their day!"

The Art Paws schedule focuses on all things doggie.  Perhaps the culmination is the 11am Canine Contests! The Art Paws "Most Pawpular" and "Best Dressed" catagories will award prizes, with celebrity judges and pup loving presenters: Terri Russell – Ch 8 KOLO; Amanda Sanchez – Ch 8 KOLO; and Terri Farley –American author of the Phantom Stallion Series.

This year we are happy to announce a new canine contest celebrity judge Tom Jacobs from The Animal Life Radio Show, 1180AM.  The Animal Life is a radio talk show broadcast every other Wednesday at 1pm hosted by Tom Jacobs focusing on all creatures great and small in our community.

Art Paws is an annual Artown event attracting more than 5,000 pets and their people.  This event celebrates responsible pet ownership, brings together the network of animal-aid organizations, and raises money for three local pet-related grants, all in a artsy, festival-like environment with concerts, beer tastings, raffles and silent auctions.

"Dogs and animals in general have always been favorite subjects of artists, commented Michelle McHardy, event coordinator of Art Paws.  "We thought an animal event featuring artists, pet rescue, and animal-related businesses would be a sure hit."

And best of all, Art Paws is "putting on the dog!  Dogs get adopted, money is raised, and a doggone good time is had by all!

Artown's Biggest Bring Your Dog Day! Get ready...

You and Your Dog Are Invited to the
          14th Annual Art Paws
Sunday, July 20, 2014  *  10am to 5pm
McKinley Arts & Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive
FREE ADMISSION!

RENO, Nev. – Artown has gone to the dogs!

Come July 20, thousands of revelers and their best friends will trek to Art Paws, Artown’s biggest dog-friendly event, to enjoy food, libations, great live music and a silent auction — and that’s just the two-legged set. The real treat, of course, is for those who loved the car ride.

From portraitists and jewelers to pet psychics, more than 80 unique vendors are coming to the McKinley Arts & Culture Center this year to dote on canine guests. And they’re not the only ones. Celebrity judges will be on hand to judge contests (think “best trick” and “owner lookalike”), and Reno’s many animal lovers can hobnob and relax in each other’s company, too. Even dog-inspired art projects are part of the fun.

A popular free one involves pups’ paw-prints tracked across paper.

“It sounds really silly,” says event host Landess Witmer, who took the helm at Art Paws more than a decade ago, “but it’s absolutely adorable, and people frame this. Sometimes even a tail will get in there. It just celebrates how fun animals are, and how they really are a member of the family to a lot of us.”

As for the stars of the show, “it’s every breed you’ve ever seen,” she says. “They’re all there.”

“We do not have dog fights,” she adds with a chuckle. “We have people battles.”

Actually, that only happened once.  “And it was related to our silent auctions,” Witmer explains, “because our items are too good.”

The 14th annual “canine carnival” turned sniff-worthy social hour is also a fundraiser; all proceeds go to nonprofits for pets, with one of three beneficiaries to be picked this year by audience vote. In 2013, the US Wolf Refuge, Boxers and Buddies, and Shakespeare Animal Fund were awarded $6,000, thanks to Art Paws.

Art Paws during the month of July is part of the 19th annual Artown festival, July 2014. The month-long summer arts festival features more than 400 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide, with major funding provided by the City of Reno.

RENO — As the nation celebrates its independence in the month of July, Art Paws asks not what animals can do for their country, but what their community can do for them.

More than 100 local vendors will congregate in celebrating canine independence days at the 12th annual Art Paws from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 15 at the McKinley Arts and Cultural Center.

Art Paws is the only canine-friendly event at the Artown festival. The event features products and services designed to uplift the canine mind, body and soul — and help animals in need. Voting at Art Paws will determine which three local animal-aid agencies will garner all the proceeds from the event. In 2011, the U.S. Wolf Refuge, Feline Rescue of Northern Nevada and Boxers & Buddies received more than $6,000. The event is being presented by PetFolio Magazine and all proceeds from the event will benefit local non-profit pet organizations. A special feature this year will be a free “Tribute to Animals” by the Nevada Opera, as well as wine and beer tastings and an evening concert by Rhythm Tailors Hillbilly Band. Admission to this event is free.

Attendees can enjoy canine art provided by artists and artisans, a silent auction of pet items, a raffle with prizes from pet product vendors and dogs will be encouraged to try their hand at paw painting. There also will be a chance for dogs to show off their unique talents and skills in the Canine Contests, some of which include cutest dog, best costume and best trick.

Art Paws is part of the 17th annual Artown festival, which takes place over the entire month of July. The summer arts festival features more than 400 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide. Artown receives major funding from the city of Reno, and is sponsored by the Grand Sierra Resort, U.S. Bank, NV Energy, JLH Inc., Waste Management, Basin Street Properties, the Reno Gazette-Journal, KOLO 8 News Now, KTHX-FM and KNPB with additional support from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

PetFolio Magazine was established in 1997 as a free, bi-monthly magazine designed to inform, educate and serve as a communication network for animal lovers across the Northern Nevada region. The magazine helps to raise funds and awareness for various animal rescue organizations in Nevada through its print publication and annual event, Art Paws. The McKinley Arts and Cultural Center is located at 925 Riverside Drive in Reno.
